In short: Heat and cold may be some of the oldest recovery tools we have: Finnish saunas, Japanese onsen, Korean jjimjilbang, even a Vietnamese pot of steaming leaves under a blanket. This shelf brings together our articles on heat, cold and moving between the two, each with an honest evidence label.
Ōmni Recovery Library · Recovery by Temperature
Why sit in a very hot room, then step into water cold enough to make you swear? Partly because of how you may feel afterwards: warm, loose, strangely calm. And partly because some of these practices have genuinely been studied. A Finnish study following men for about 20 years linked regular sauna with better heart health (observational, not proof), while pooled trials suggest cold water can ease muscle soreness after exercise. The articles below help separate what we know from what we simply enjoy.
How we rate evidence: every article on this shelf begins with one label from the Ōmni Evidence Scale (Strong evidence, Promising, Early evidence, No good evidence yet), so you can tell at a glance whether you are reading about clinical trials, early research or long-standing tradition. See how the Ōmni Evidence Scale works.
Our ratings so far: regular sauna and cold water after exercise, Promising; alternating hot and cold, Early evidence; herbal steam for a cold, No good evidence yet.
