In short: Vesak, the Buddha’s birthday, falls on the full moon of the fourth lunar month: Thursday 20 May 2027. The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha has not yet announced its 2027 programme for Ho Chi Minh City; last year the main ceremony was held at Việt Nam Quốc Tự. Dress modestly, move quietly, eat vegetarian with the locals, and keep an evening for stillness of your own.

Maybe you timed your trip for it, or maybe you simply noticed the five-coloured flags appearing over pagoda gates and wondered what was coming. Vesak, Phật Đản in Vietnamese, is one of the most beautiful times to be in Saigon: incense, lanterns, chanting drifting out into the evening traffic, and families in their best clothes heading to the pagoda. This guide is for curious, respectful visitors: when it is, where to go, how to behave inside a pagoda, what to eat, and how to round off a day of crowds and heat with a quiet evening.

Vesak 2027 at a glance

Vesak follows the lunar calendar, so the date moves each year. Here is what is confirmed for 2027, and what last year’s programme looked like. The 2027 schedule has not been announced yet, so check again closer to the date.

If 2027 follows a similar pattern, the celebrations will stretch over several days around the full moon rather than a single evening, which gives you some flexibility.

Three pagodas to know

Ho Chi Minh City has hundreds of pagodas, and on Vesak almost all of them are decorated. These three are well known and easy to reach by Grab:

  • Việt Nam Quốc Tự, 244 Ba Tháng Hai, Hòa Hưng ward. The seat of the city’s Buddhist Sangha executive board, with a 13-storey tower about 63 metres tall. In 2026 it hosted both the bathing-the-Buddha ceremony and the main Vesak ceremony, so expect it to be the busiest.
  • Vĩnh Nghiêm Pagoda, 339 Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa, in the old District 3. Begun in 1964 in traditional northern Vietnamese style but built in concrete, with a seven-storey tower about 40 metres tall and a peace bell donated from Japan.
  • Giác Lâm Pagoda, 565 Lạc Long Quân. Founded in 1744 and one of the oldest pagodas in the city, with a seven-storey stupa, a main hall of 98 wooden pillars and a bodhi tree brought from Sri Lanka in 1953. Calmer and greener than the other two.

Each pagoda sets its own Vesak programme. Ask at the gate or check local news for times, and go early in the evening if you want to see people arriving with flowers and lanterns.

Visiting a pagoda respectfully

Pagodas in Vietnam are welcoming places, and visitors are rarely turned away. On Vesak they are also full of families who have come to pray, so a little care goes a long way:

  • Cover shoulders and knees. A light scarf and long trousers or a long skirt are perfect for the heat.
  • Take off your shoes before stepping into a hall, and follow what others do at the door.
  • Speak softly and keep your phone on silent, especially during chanting.
  • Ask before photographing people, and do not use a flash in the halls. Photos of the buildings and decorations are usually fine.
  • Do not touch statues or offerings, and do not point your feet towards the altar if you sit down.
  • Join in only if you wish. You are welcome to watch quietly from the side; no one expects you to take part in the rituals.

Eat vegetarian, like the locals

Many Vietnamese eat vegetarian on full moon days, and on Vesak the vegetarian eateries near pagodas fill up with families. It is a lovely way to share the day: point at a few dishes of tofu, mushrooms and fresh greens, and enjoy. Our guide to vegan and vegetarian travel in Ho Chi Minh City lists places we have checked, from simple cơm chay to Michelin-listed restaurants.

An evening of stillness

May in Saigon is hot and humid, the pagodas are crowded, and a full day of heat, incense and traffic can leave you buzzing. Many visitors love to end it somewhere quiet. A float is a simple way to do that. You lie back in about 25 cm of warm water with dense, mineral-rich Epsom salt, so the water carries your whole weight, at 33–34 °C, close to skin temperature. The private room can go fully dark and silent, and for an hour there is nothing to do but breathe.

To be clear, floating is not a Buddhist practice or a religious ritual of any kind. It is simply time in warm, quiet water, and people of every faith and none enjoy it. If you are new to it, read what float therapy is.

Ōmni Evidence Scale: Strong evidence, for float and stress. Several trials point the same way. We rate it Strong because, on top of these trials, user experience is overwhelmingly positive: in a 2025 survey of regular floaters, 92% reported relaxation and 77% less stress, echoed by thousands of reviews, Reddit threads and forums, and by athletes and public figures who float. See how we rate evidence on the Ōmni Evidence Scale.

Prefer to see the evening ceremonies? Float the next day instead, when the city is back to normal. The pagodas are in the centre and west of the city, while Ōmni is in Thảo Điền, across the river to the east; Grab is the easiest way between them. A quiet evening at Ōmni Space

Ōmni Space is at 16C Quốc Hương, Thảo Điền, open 9:00–21:00 every day, with the last float starting at 20:00. We are the team that opened Vietnam’s first float centre, Float Vietnam, in 2017. A float is 1,500,000 VND for 60 minutes or 2,000,000 VND for 90 minutes. No swimsuit needed in the private float room, and each room has its own shower. Online booking is paid by bank transfer, and international cards are accepted at the counter. Guests rate Ōmni 4.8 ★ across 72 Google reviews (25 October 2026).
