In short: Tết 2027, the Year of the Goat, begins on Saturday 6 February 2027, with New Year’s Eve on the night of Friday 5 February. If you are flying home or visiting Saigon for it, arrive a few days early to shake off jet lag, expect a quiet city with many shops closed in the first days, and keep one calm hour for yourself between the family visits.

The ticket is booked. Your mother has already planned the menu, your aunt has asked twice when you land, and somewhere between the long flight and the first round of visits you will need to sleep. Coming home for Tết is wonderful and full on: a body still on another clock, a week of feasts and late nights, and a city that suddenly slows to a hush. This guide is for that week, whether you grew up here or are seeing Tết for the first time: the dates, how to land well and how to keep a little room to breathe.

Land early, land gently

Give your body clock three or four days. In February, Vietnam is 15 hours ahead of California, 12 hours ahead of the US East Coast, 6 hours ahead of Paris and Berlin, and 4 hours behind Sydney. A jump like that takes a few days to settle. If you can, land by Tuesday 2 or Wednesday 3 February, so the reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve does not meet you in the middle of the night, body time. Our jet lag guide for Vietnam has a simple plan for light, meals and naps.

Morning light, short naps. Get outside in the morning sun, keep naps short and eat on local time. Landing at dawn? See what to do when you arrive before check-in.

The Tết rhythm: lovely, and a lot

The days before the New Year are for cleaning, shopping at the flower markets and cooking. New Year’s Eve is a family dinner and the turn of the year at midnight. Then come the visits: the first days of Tết are traditionally for parents and close family, then relatives and friends, then teachers and colleagues, and every house offers tea, candied fruit, bánh tét or bánh chưng and something stronger. It is warm and generous, and by mùng 3 most people are short on sleep.

If you are a guest or a partner meeting the family for the first time, a few things help: bring a small gift when you visit, wear something bright rather than all black or white, and do not worry about getting every custom right.

Saigon over Tết: a city that exhales

Many people who live in Ho Chi Minh City go back to their home provinces for Tết, and in the first days of the New Year the city feels like a different place: wide, empty boulevards, no horns, the smell of incense drifting out of open doorways. It is one of the most peaceful times of the year to walk around. A few practical notes:

  • Many shops and restaurants close for several days, especially from New Year’s Eve to mùng 3. Large malls, hotels and some cafés stay open; local favourites often do not.
  • Book transport early. Flights and buses around Tết fill up weeks ahead, and the airport is busy in the days before New Year’s Eve.
  • Check what is on. The Nguyễn Huệ flower street is usually the city’s big Tết display, but the 2027 schedule has not been announced yet. Our calendar of major events in Ho Chi Minh City will add it once it is confirmed.
  • Evenings are gentle. When the city reopens, our guide to Saigon at night has calm ideas, and Thảo Điền, the leafy riverside neighbourhood where we are, is a pleasant place for a slow walk.

One quiet hour between the visits

Between the jet lag, the feasts and the late nights, the thing most of us miss over Tết is one hour with no one to talk to and nowhere to be. That is what a float is. You lie back in about 25 cm of warm water with dense, mineral-rich Epsom salt, so the water carries your whole weight, at 33–34 °C, close to skin temperature. The private room can go fully dark and silent. No phone, no questions about marriage or salary. Many guests tell us they sleep deeply that night, which is exactly what a body crossing time zones needs. New to it? Read what float therapy is.

Ōmni Evidence Scale: Strong evidence, for float and stress. Several trials point the same way. We rate it Strong because, on top of these trials, user experience is overwhelmingly positive: in a 2025 survey of regular floaters, 92% reported relaxation and 77% less stress, echoed by thousands of reviews, Reddit threads and forums, and by athletes and public figures who float. See how we rate evidence on the Ōmni Evidence Scale.

If you would rather wake up than wind down, a few rounds in the infrared sauna with red light and a short dip in the cold plunge feel wonderful after a heavy lunch. Coming as two? The Couple Room lets you float side by side.
