In short: With under 6 hours in Ho Chi Minh City, stay inside the airport. With 6–10 hours, stay near Tân Sơn Nhất. With about 10–12 hours, you can reach Thảo Điền for a float, a private shower and lunch: allow 60–90 minutes each way by Grab. First check on official sites whether you may leave the airport at all.

This guide is written by the team at Ōmni Space, a float and recovery space in Thảo Điền that opened in 2025. Our team opened Vietnam’s first float centre (Float Vietnam, Hanoi, 2017). Here is how we would plan a layover of 6, 8 or 12 hours: honest time maths first, then good ways to spend the hours, including a real rest stop.

Step 1: check whether you can leave the airport

Whether you may pass immigration, and whether you need a visa, depends on your passport, your ticket and the rules on the day. These rules change, so we do not summarise them. Check these official sources:

  • Vietnam Immigration Department: immigration.gov.vn, the national immigration portal, with e-visa information and a contact page.
  • Vietnam National E-Visa system: evisa.gov.vn, the official site for e-visa applications. Avoid look-alike agency sites.
  • Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport (ACV): acv.vn/en/sgn, the official airport page.
  • Your airline: ask whether your bags are checked through to your final destination, and what time you must be back for your next flight.

Check before you fly; rules change. We last checked that these links work on 11 October 2026. This article is not visa advice.

Layover length: what makes sense

A layover can look long on paper but feel short once you count queues and traffic, which is hard to predict at rush hour and in the rain. Use this table as a starting point.

LayoverOur suggestionWhy
Under 6 hoursStay inside the airportAfter arrival formalities and the return buffer, very little is left.
6–8 hoursStay airside, or go only somewhere very close to the airportA round trip to Thảo Điền alone takes 2–3 hours by Grab. Close to the airport, a park walk or a meal is realistic.
8–12 hours8–10 h: near the airport or a short look at District 1. 10–12 h: a real rest stop in Thảo Điền is possibleWith 10 hours or more, you can fit 60–90 minutes each way to Thảo Điền, a 60-minute float, a shower and lunch.
OvernightSleep: a hotel near the airport, or the airport’s rest areasŌmni is open 9:00–21:00, so it is not an overnight option. If your connection leaves late the next day, a morning or afternoon float can still fit.

The time maths

Work backwards from your next departure. The simple formula:

Free time in the city = layover − arrival formalities − travel out − travel back − the time your airline wants you at the airport before departure.

  • Arrival formalities: immigration, and collecting bags if they are not checked through. Queues vary a lot; be generous.
  • Travel: Tân Sơn Nhất to Ōmni in Thảo Điền is about 60–90 minutes by Grab, each way. For other places, check the live estimate in the Grab app, and add time at rush hour or in heavy rain.
  • Back at the airport: your airline tells you how early to arrive for check-in and passport control. For an international flight this is often hours, not minutes.

Worked example (12-hour layover): you land at 07:00 and fly on at 19:00. Suppose arrival takes 1 hour and your airline wants you back 3 hours before departure (check your own numbers). You leave the airport at 08:00, reach Thảo Điền by about 09:30, and must leave again by 14:30 to be back at 16:00. That gives you about 5 hours in Thảo Điền. The same maths with an 8-hour layover leaves only 1–2 hours, which is why we suggest staying close to the airport.

Near the airport: short and easy

Tân Sơn Nhất sits inside the city. If you leave for only a few hours, keep it simple:

  • Gia Định Park (Hoàng Minh Giám street, Phú Nhuận): one of the city’s large green parks, with shady paths. Local running clubs train here.
  • A spa with hot tubs and steam: Onsen Wellness Việt (334A Nguyễn Trọng Tuyển, Tân Bình) has private hot mineral tubs, a jjimjilbang-style steam area and massage. Ask about showers and bag storage when you book.
  • Inside the airport: pay-to-enter lounges, some with showers, plus quiet seating areas and sleep zones. Lounges in the international terminal may only be open to you after check-in and passport control.

Moving between flights to Phú Quốc or Đà Nẵng? Domestic flights use Terminals 1 and 3, international flights Terminal 2, and a free landside shuttle links all three. Check the airport site for your terminal.

District 1: the classic sights

First time in Saigon with 8–10 hours? A short look at District 1 is the classic choice: the Saigon Central Post Office, City Hall (from outside), the Opera House and the War Remnants Museum. Check opening hours, and keep the Cu Chi Tunnels for another trip: they need a half or full day.

The catch: District 1 is busy and hot, and sightseeing is not rest.

Thảo Điền: a real rest stop (10–12 hours)

Thảo Điền is a leafy riverside neighbourhood with cafés, small shops and good local food. It suits longer layovers: a calmer pace, and a place to lie down and shower before your next flight.

At Ōmni you can leave up to 4 suitcases, float for 60 minutes in skin-temperature water with 500 kg of Epsom salt, and shower in your own float room. A hairdryer, shampoo and shower gel are provided. For travellers between flights we offer a “Pre-flight reset”: a float, a private shower and luggage storage. It costs 1,900,000 VND (with a 90-minute float); just ask for the “Pre-flight reset” when you book. See float prices and how to find us.

Here is the 12-hour example from above (land 07:00, fly 19:00), with the float near the end so you board fresh. These are places our team uses; check opening hours before you go.

Flying on late at night instead? Our guide to a last day in Saigon with a late-night flight has an afternoon-to-evening plan. More ideas are in our Thảo Điền guide.

Why lying down beats another airport chair

Travel days keep the nervous system in “alert” mode. A deliberate rest gives your body a chance to shift towards “rest and digest” before the next flight. In a float, the salt water carries your whole body, the room is dark and quiet, and many people find their breathing slows. Read more in What is float therapy?

What does the research say? (Ratings follow the Ōmni Evidence Scale.) A 2005 meta-analysis (a study that pools the results of many studies) by van Dierendonck and te Nijenhuis combined 27 studies with 449 participants and found positive effects on body measures such as cortisol and blood pressure, and on well-being. In 2018, Feinstein and colleagues found that one 60-minute float sharply reduced anxiety in 50 people with anxiety and stress-related conditions, but there was no control group.

Ōmni Evidence Scale: Promising. For float and stress: a 2005 meta-analysis plus newer trials, but samples are small and some studies have no control group.

The limits: nobody has studied floating during a layover, or as a way to prevent jet lag. A float is a way to rest, not a treatment.

Ōmni Evidence Scale: No good evidence yet. For float as a jet-lag remedy: we found no studies that tested it.

Staying safe: heat, water and timing

  • Heat: Saigon is hot and humid all year. The World Health Organization advises drinking water regularly, staying in the shade, and avoiding strenuous activity at the hottest time of day. Plan indoor or shady stops around midday.
  • Feeling unwell in the heat: dizziness, confusion or collapse need urgent help. In Vietnam, call 115 for an ambulance.
  • Floating: if you are pregnant, talk to your doctor first and tell the Ōmni team when you book. Ōmni sends a health questionnaire before your visit and asks again on site. Read Before your first float.
  • Sauna and cold plunge: Ōmni also has an infrared sauna (45–55°C) and a cold plunge (11–15°C). Between two flights, a float alone is usually enough. If you add heat or cold, drink water, and skip them after alcohol, in pregnancy or with a heart condition.
  • Time buffer: if traffic slows you down, cut the city plan, not the buffer.

Ōmni Evidence Scale: Early evidence. For infrared sauna: small trials, mostly in people with heart failure.

Where to try it in Saigon

  • Inside the airport: pay-to-enter lounges such as Apricot Lounge in the international terminal (showers available, according to a May 2026 review), plus rest areas.
  • Near the airport: Gia Định Park for a walk; Onsen Wellness Việt in Tân Bình for hot tubs, steam and massage.
  • More spas and saunas: our Saigon Wellness Map; ask each place about showers and bags.
  • In Thảo Điền: Ōmni Space, 16C Quốc Hương. Float with a private shower and luggage storage; ask for the “Pre-flight reset” (1,900,000 VND). Open 9:00–21:00 daily, last session 20:00, walk-ins until 18:00. Add-ons cost 450,000 VND per person alone or +200,000 VND with a float; sauna and cold plunge together cost 900,000 VND per room (up to 4 people). See all services or book online.
