In short: Most hotels let you in at 14:00, so a 5:00 landing leaves about seven hours to fill. Get cash and a SIM in the arrivals hall, drink water, eat a light breakfast and get daylight before the heat. Then find a shower, a safe place for your bags and real rest: a pre-booked room, a café, or a float with a private shower in Thảo Điền.
You land at 5:00 after a red-eye, eyes stinging, suitcase in hand, and the hotel says “come back at two”. Seven hours of limbo lie ahead. This plan turns them into a soft landing: cash and SIM sorted before you leave the airport, a first morning that helps your body clock, then a shower and a real rest before check-in.
Why your room isn’t ready at 6:00
Hotels need the morning to clean rooms after the night’s guests leave. In Ho Chi Minh City the usual rhythm is check-out by 12:00 and check-in from 14:00: the Rex Hotel and Hotel Nikko Saigon both list those times. Nikko adds that early arrival can be arranged on request, depending on availability, and some hotels charge for it.
- Need a bed the moment you land? Book the room from the night before. It is the only way to be sure.
- Happy to wait? Email the hotel a few days ahead with your landing time, ask for early check-in “if available”, and ask whether they will keep your bags.
- Landing after midnight? Book the previous night too.
At Tân Sơn Nhất: what you can do before leaving the airport
International flights arrive at Terminal 2. The arrivals hall has counters from the big mobile networks (Viettel, Mobifone and Vinaphone), ATMs and currency exchange, so you can sort out data and cash before ordering a car. Counter hours vary.

- Lounges are for departures. Pay-to-enter lounges with showers are in international departures, after immigration. They are for people flying out, not arrivals.
- Left luggage is not certain. We could not confirm a left-luggage counter at Tân Sơn Nhất; a travel guide updated in October 2026 says neither terminal has one. Ask at the information desk; services and prices change. Your hotel is usually the easier option.
- Which terminal? Terminal 3, the new domestic terminal, took its first flight on 17 April 2025. Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, Pacific Airlines, VASCO and Vietravel Airlines fly domestic routes from T3, while Vietjet stayed at T1. A new airport, Long Thành, is due to open to commercial flights around the end of 2026 (the date has moved several times), so check which airport is printed on your ticket.
A Grab car is the simplest way into town, and before the morning rush the roads are usually calmer. A recent guide puts the ride to District 1 at 30–45 minutes; to Thảo Điền it takes about 60–90 minutes, depending on traffic.
A first morning that helps your body clock
The next few hours can make jet lag easier or harder:
- Water first. The CDC notes that dehydration can make jet lag symptoms worse.
- A light breakfast. A bowl of phở or a bánh mì at local breakfast time tells your body that the day has started.
- Daylight at the right time. Light is the strongest signal for your body clock. The sun rises between about 5:30 and 6:15 all year. Coming from Europe, keep the very early morning soft (sunglasses in the car are fine) and get daylight from late morning; from Korea, Japan, China or Australia the gap is only 1–4 hours, so it is mostly travel tiredness. Our jet lag guide explains the timing for each region.
- Short naps only. The CDC says naps of 20–30 minutes help you stay alert, while longer daytime naps can spoil your night’s sleep. Set an alarm.
- Walk early, rest at midday. Saigon is hot and humid all year, so walk before mid-morning and plan shade or indoor time around noon. See our Saigon heat guide, and the rainy-day guide if the sky opens.
Ōmni Evidence Scale: Promising, for timed daylight to reset the body clock. The science of how light shifts the clock is solid and underpins CDC advice, but few trials have tested light plans in real travellers.

Where to rest in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) before check-in: your options
It depends on how tired you are, how much you carry and where your hotel is.
| Option | What you get | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay at the airport | Seats, SIM, cash and food in the arrivals hall; the lounges with showers are for departing passengers | Free | Very short waits, or a domestic connection |
| Book the night before, or a day-use room | A real bed and a private shower the moment you arrive | About one extra night; ask the hotel | Long red-eyes, families, an afternoon meeting |
| Café and an early walk | Breakfast, coffee, daylight and a slow start to the city | The price of breakfast | Light packers who slept on the plane |
| Co-working day pass | A desk, Wi-Fi and air conditioning; many don’t open at dawn | Varies; check the space | Business travellers with calls to make |
| Spa or wellness space | A shower, a place for your bags and lying-down rest; ask each place what is included | Varies; Ōmni floats from 1,500,000 VND for 60 minutes | Anyone who wants to feel human again before the afternoon |
If you are only passing through, our Ho Chi Minh City layover guide does the time maths for 6, 8 and 12 hours. Flying out at the end of your trip? The last-day guide for late-night flights covers the other end. New to the city? Start with our visitor guide.
A shower, your bags and deep rest in Thảo Điền
Our centre is at 16C Quốc Hương, in leafy Thảo Điền, open 9:00–21:00 daily. Walk-ins are welcome until 18:00, but for a morning slot booking ahead is safer. What an early arrival gets:
- Your bags: we can store up to 4 suitcases while you rest and explore.
- A proper shower: every float room has its own private shower, with shampoo, shower gel, a hairdryer and fresh towels. Earplugs are provided.
- Deep rest: you lie back on about 25 cm of warm water, 33–34 °C and close to skin temperature, holding about 500 kg of dense, mineral-rich Epsom salt. The water carries you, so every muscle can let go. The room is private and you lock it from the inside. In the private float room no swimsuit is needed; the sauna and cold plunge are swimsuit areas. Our open pools sit behind soundproof glass; see float pod vs float room.
- Prices: a 60-minute float is 1,500,000 VND for one person; the couple room is 2,200,000 VND per room for 60 minutes. See the float price page for other options.
- Timing: allow about 15 minutes before your float (a short guide and a rinse) and about 15 minutes after (your shower).

A float is not a nap. It is an hour of deep rest: quiet, still and weightless, while the mind settles into a calm, meditative state. Many people sleep better that night, which is exactly what you want on day one. Travelling from far away? Read float therapy in Vietnam for travellers.

Is a float good after a long flight?
For stress and relaxation, the research is clear. A 2005 meta-analysis (a study that pools the results of many studies) of 27 studies with 449 participants found benefits for well-being and body measures such as cortisol and blood pressure. In a 2018 randomised crossover trial with 31 anxious adults, one 90-minute float lowered anxiety and muscle tension clearly more than the comparison session.
Ōmni Evidence Scale: Strong evidence, for float and stress. We rate it Strong because, on top of these trials, user experience is overwhelmingly positive: in a 2025 survey of regular floaters, 92% reported relaxation and 77% less stress, echoed by thousands of reviews, Reddit threads and forums, and by athletes and public figures who float. See how we rate evidence on the Ōmni Evidence Scale.
What about jet lag and travel fatigue? Yes, a float can help. After hours folded into a seat, your body is weightless at last: the water takes the load off your back, neck and legs. With almost no light or sound, and water close to skin temperature, your nervous system has little to react to and can shift towards “rest and digest”. Guests often step out feeling lighter and clearer. No study has tested floating for jet lag itself, so resetting your body clock is still the job of daylight and sleep.
Ōmni Evidence Scale: Mechanism-based, no direct study, for float and travel fatigue. Weightless support, quiet and warm water can help the body unwind after a long flight; no trial has measured jet lag after floating.

Sample timelines
A suggestion, not a rule: adjust it to your flight and hotel.

| 6:15–7:30 | Grab to Thảo Điền | About 60–90 minutes, depending on traffic |
| 7:30–8:45 | Light breakfast and a slow walk | Keep coffee small before a float; enjoy a cà phê sữa đá afterwards |
| 9:00–10:30 | Drop your bags, shower, float for 60 minutes, shower again | Book the 9:00 slot ahead |
| 10:30–12:30 | Lounge, early lunch, a short stroll in the shade | Ideas in our Thảo Điền guide |

| Late morning | An easy walk or a float, any time from 9:00 | Walk before the midday heat |
Safety notes
- Float is not medical treatment. If you feel unwell after a flight, see a doctor; in Vietnam, call 115 for an ambulance.
- Drink water first. After a long flight, rehydrate before your float or a sauna.
- Skin: salt water stings, so wait until a fresh tattoo has healed, and skip the float with open cuts. Avoid shaving on the day.
- Health questionnaire: every guest fills one in; please answer fully and honestly.
- Pregnancy: you are welcome; tell us when you book, and ask your doctor first if you have complications.
- Periods: you can’t float during your period, for hygiene reasons; see before your first float.
- Tired after a night flight? Don’t drive or ride a motorbike; take a Grab.
Where to try it in Saigon

FAQ
Can I check in early at a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City?
Sometimes. Check-in is usually 14:00 and early check-in depends on availability. To be sure of a room at dawn, book the night before.
Is there left luggage at Tân Sơn Nhất airport?
We could not confirm one, and a recent travel guide says there is none. Ask at the information desk, or leave your bags at your hotel.
Where can I shower after an early-morning arrival?
At your hotel if you booked the night before, at some spas, or in a float room with a private shower at Ōmni Space in Thảo Điền from 9:00.
How long is the Grab from the airport to Thảo Điền?
About 60–90 minutes, depending on traffic.
Should I sleep when I arrive in the morning?
Keep naps to 20–30 minutes and stay up until the local evening.
Can floating help with jet lag?
Yes, it can help you unwind: the water takes the weight off your body, and the quiet calms your nervous system. No study has tested jet lag itself, so pair your float with daylight and a normal bedtime.
